Useful information on Australia
General: Australia is a country in the Southern Hemisphere between the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. Its official name is the Commonwealth of Australia. Australia is the sixth biggest country in the world by landmass. 22 million people live in Australia. About 60% live in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Australia's capital city is Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory. Although Canberra is the capital of Australia, it is relatively small in population. The continent of Australia and the islands of New Zealand are called Australasia, and together with the islands nearby, Oceania. Languages: Australia has no official language and no declared national language. English is the default language throughout the country. CIA World Factbook (cia.gov) shows that 78.5% of Australians speak English and then Italian, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Mandarin and Vietnamese, in that order, are the other widely spoken languages. There are many remaining Aboriginal languages spoken by the Indigenous people. Sydney is Australia’s most multicultural city, closely followed by Melbourne. Sydney and Melbourne are home to around 65 per cent of all non-English speaking migrants, who together speak some 240 foreign languages. Australian English is similar to British English. In everyday use, many words have a completely different meaning in Australia than they do in other English-speaking countries. Australians often cannot decide whether to use American or British spelling, e.g. program/programme, labor/labour, etc., and consequently you will find both in use. Everything is abbreviated in Australia, often by shortening any word with more than two syllables and adding a suffix e, o, i, ie or y (Ex. Aussie for Australian, reffo for refugee, footy for football).
Climate: The climate of Australia varies widely, but by far the largest part of Australia is desert or semi-arid. The weather can range from below zero temperatures in the Snowy Mountains to intolerable heat in the north-west. It is considered to be one of the driest continents on earth. Being in the Southern Hemisphere its seasons are in reverse to Europe and America:
- Spring: September - November
- Summer: December - February
- Autumn: March - May
- Winter: June - August
Spring and Autumn have the nicest weather.

The Australian mainland is made up of five states and two territories, with the sixth state of Tasmania being made up of islands. The symbol for AUD can be written A$, Au$, $Au, Aud$, $Aud, Aus$, and $Aus. The Australian Dollar is divided into 100 cents.
