The Spiny Shell, also sometimes referred to as the Blue Shell, is an item that debuted in the second Mario Kart title, Mario Kart 64, and has been in every Mario Kart game since. Although the Spiny Shell has taken on many different forms and variations throughout the series, its main objective has always remained the same: to target the leader in the race.
- Game Guy's Roulette is one of the few Game Guy mini-games that make appearances in Mario Party 3. To play the mini-game in the Party Mode you must land on a Game Guy space. This could then be one of the many types of games that could appear.
- Mario Kart 64 is the second main installment of the Mario Kart series. It is the first game in the series to use three-dimensional graphics; however, the characters and items in this game are still two-dimensional, pre-rendered sprites. It was released for the Nintendo 64 and later became available for the Wii and Wii U's Virtual Console.
- Fear Roulette is a special move used only by the Ding-A-Lings in the game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. When Fear Roulette is used, a red crystal appears on the screen. With Fear Roulette, the crystal selects its victim and when it hits, it may cause Instant Death.Wearing an item such as a Quartz Charm can cancel out this effect.
- From the history of Mario Kart for Nintendo's Home Consoles.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
---|
Developer: Nintendo EPD This game has unused graphics. |
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is an enhanced port of the Wii U game, including new characters, a revamped Battle Mode, and the ability to hold two items at once, not seen since Double Dash!!. Also Inklings.
- 6Unused Model
- 9Version Differences
Unused Graphics
DLC icons from the Wii U release were leftover in the game, and go unused here since all of the past DLC was built into Deluxe. The grey versions are specular maps, and the bottom image is a normal map for all icons.
Leftover Wii U Battle Tracks
All tracks that were used as battle arenas in the Wii U version still have the battle_muunt.byaml in their files, meaning that with some hacks they can be accessed and battled on as normal.
Removed Test Track
There are leftovers for a test track called 'test_DanceFloor' in CourseEAD. All that remains is some lighting data.
Removed Reverse Mode
There seems to have once been a racing mode where the racers go around the track backwards. In ObjFlow.bymal there are references to 'TEST_Gyakusou_Dash', 'TEST_Gyakusou_Glide' and 'TEST_Gyakusou_Barrier'. Gyakusou means 'Reverse Run' in Japanese. A reverse mode was also once planned for Mario Kart: Double Dash!! but was scrapped in that game as well.
Removed Difficulty
In most of the AI tables (RaceCommon/AI), there's some AI settings for an Expert difficulty. There are no other references for this difficulty, so it may have been cut early in development. It was removed for unknown reasons, though the best guess is it may have simply been too hard.
Unused Model
BombCar
MapObj/BombCar has an unused bomb car model. This model was actually ported directly from Mario Kart Wii, except it has some slight differences. The eyes are now 3D, the wheel animation doesn't exist, and it doesn't have the lights coming out of its eyes. It only has a single animation for the key on the back of it. It doesn't exist in objflow.byaml, but when added into it, the model does load properly, but doesn't have its original functions. This model isn't in the Wii U version. It was added to the Switch version for some reason.
PrisonTest
Final |
---|
MapObjPrisonTest contains a test version of the prison used in Renegade Roundup. The final model is in MapObjTS_Prison. The test version has a smaller collision file, doesn't have a separate collision file for the switch and doesn't have any sound files in its folder. Also, the final one has an effects model in MapObjTS_Prison_FX to go along with the main model. Note that the button used to be an anti-gravity booster. Players also get a speed boost after pressing the button, though its effects are much more similar to using a Mushroom.

Internal Project Name
The project's internal name is 'TurboS', according to multiple strings. The filenames of some promotional artwork released to the press by Nintendo also provide evidence of this being the game's internal name. 'Turbo' is Mario Kart 8's internal project name.
Regional Differences
All text changes between the NTSC and PAL releases of the base game were carried over to Deluxe. This was likely done purely for consistency's sake, since none of the newly introduced parts and stages have different names (aside from spelling differences and to be consistent with earlier Mario Kart games), and other contemporary Nintendo games have only one English translation for all regions.
